Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa (Humantay Lagoon)
The pick-up time from the hotel in Cusco will be at 04:30 hours and then we will go by our bus from Cusco city to Mollepata town (2800 mts / 9186.35 ft). Where we will have breakfast, then continue by bus to Challacancha (3600 mts / 11811.02 ft), where our handler will wait with their horses, who will carry the load to start the adventure.
Our guide will give you the introduction of the path and then start the ascent towards the Soraypampa esplanade (3800 mts / 12467.19 ft) for about 2 hours until you reach the lunch point, from there, we will have the first views of the imposing Apu Salcantay, also in this part of the road we will be in front of the Humantay mountain; After a break we will go to the turquoise lagoon of Humantay (4200 mts / 13779.53 ft) for 2 hours round trip, its waters come from the snow of the same name. There the camp will be installed and we will spend the first night.
Day 2: Soraypampa – Soyrococha – Abra De Salcantay – Wayracpampa – Chaullay
We will wake up our team staff with hot drinks, then we will have breakfast and we will receive previous instructions from our guide to continue the adventure in the microclimate of the Salcantay mountain, one of the most powerful and active deities of the place, it is also appreciated by the inhabitants, the father of all the mountains of the region and even today is the object of great veneration, so that Machupicchu and Choquequirao maintain an intimate visual contact with the Salcantay.
In the first section we will ascend to the Abra Salcantay (4629 mts / 15187.01 ft), the highest place on the route, where we will enjoy a beautiful and valuable view of the glaciers that adorn the Vilcabamba mountain range. We will continue the adventure for 3 hours of descent to Wayracpampa, there we will take lunch and then descend for approximately 3 hours towards Chaullay (2900 mts / 9514.44 ft); Campsite, an area of Cloud Forest, after the steps of the Salcantay River.
Day 3: Chaullay – Collpapampa – La Playa Sahuayaco
After breakfast we will continue descending through a narrow path along the river bank, where we will notice a change in the weather, everything becomes warmer, wetter and greener until we reach Playa Sahuayaco, where we will have an introduction of coffee cultivation, then we will have lunch and camp. In the afternoon we can visit the thermal baths of Cocalmayo (optional).
Day 4: La Playa Sahuayaco – Lucmabamba – Llactapata- Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
After breakfast we will continue for 3 hours approximately the ascent adventure to Llactapata archaeological complex, place that houses an impressive system of terraces and terraces of culture. Then we will descend for about 2 hours towards the Aobamba River until we reach the Machu Picchu Hydroelectric, after lunch we will continue with the road until we reach the town of Aguas Calientes, that is where we will spend our last night at the foot of the great Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, with accommodation in a hotel.
Day 5: Machu Picchu – Cusco
The last day at 05:30 hours we will get ready to head to the bus stop to go up to the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world, on a way up in the middle of the jungle. Then we will register at the access control at 06:00 hours and see the sunrise already within the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu. Once there, we will receive the guide of approximately 3 hours. Then we will have a free time to take walks and take pictures in the place, then return on the bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes and board the train that will take us back to Ollantaytambo and from here return by bus to the city Cusco.
